Singapore Market Event - Thursday 20 April at 5:30-6:30PM NZT, hybrid.


ANZBC, in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE), is delighted to bring you the second event in this Market Event Series 2023 - Market Event on Singapore.


Guest speakers H.E Gabrielle Rush, New Zealand's High Commissioner to Singapore, and Maggie Christie, New Zealand's Trade Commissioner to Singapore, will provide us with an overview of the outlook on Singapore, key developments, market trends and opportunities, as well as the implications on New Zealand trade and business interests in to Singapore.


We will also hear from two business speakers - Josh Dry, Business Development Director for Asia-Pacific at Cogo, and Lucy Manahi, Business Analyst Intern at Shiok Meats, Singapore, will share with us their experience and learnings of doing business in Singapore, and some of the opportunities and challenges of doing business in this ASEAN market. Lucy is part of the Internship programme facilitated by the Asia New Zealand Foundation that gives opportunities to young New Zealanders to have experiences abroad.


We are honoured to welcome H.E Sudesh Maniar, Singapore's High Commissioner to New Zealand, to moderate this discussion.

    New Zealand's High Commissioner to Singapore at MFAT

    Ms Rush took up the role of New Zealand High Commissioner to Singapore in January 2023.
    Gabrielle has worked on international law and foreign and trade policy issues in the public and private sector since 1994. Prior to her current role, she led the Consular Division of the New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry from 2020–2022. She served as Acting Divisional Manager of the Ministry’s Legal Division in 2019 and has previously led both the General International and Trade Law units. She has also served as Deputy Director of the Ministry’s Americas Division and worked on United Nations, Commonwealth and human rights issues.
    Ms Rush’s diplomatic postings have included a term as New Zealand Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macao from 2014 to 2017, Political Counsellor at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing, 2013-14 and a posting to the New Zealand High Commission in London in the 1990s.
    Outside of government Ms Rush was Associate Director of the New Zealand International Business Forum and the New Zealand United States Council from 2007 to 2011 and in 2012 helped establish the New Zealand China Council. She began her career as a Crown Prosecutor and has also worked in the law faculty of the University of Hong Kong.
    Ms Rush holds a Master of Laws degree in Public International Law from the London School of Economics. She has two university-age children and is accompanied in Singapore by her partner, Clifford Hart.

    High Commissioner at Singapore High Commission in NZ

    Mr Sudesh Maniar is currently Singapore’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, a post he assumed in 15 July 2019. Prior to his current appointment, Mr Maniar was Director-General of the Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Directorate from February 2013 to June 2019. He concurrently served as Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste from February 2015 to January 2019.

    Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997, Mr Maniar has served in various other capacities related to International Organisations, International Economics and Public Affairs. He was seconded to the Asia-Europe Foundation as Director of Public Affairs from May 2007 to August 2009. He also served as Deputy Permanent Representative in the Singapore Permanent Mission in Geneva from September 2002 to September 2005.

    Mr Maniar graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics (Honours) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom in 1986.

    Mr Maniar was awarded the Long Service Medal in 2021. He is married to Madam Loo Beng Du and they have a daughter.

    Based in Singapore, Maggie is New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner to Singapore. She is responsible for facilitating and promoting trade, as well as maintaining an extensive network of business relationships relevant to New Zealand businesses to grow New Zealand companies internationally.

    Prior she was the Director of Made With Care, New Zealand’s first global brand Food and Beverage campaign designed to grow awareness, preference and demand for New Zealand’s premium food and beverage. Her prior experience includes Insurance, marketing and advertising in UK, US and New Zealand including multiple start-ups in New Zealand and North America.

    With over 25 years in both public and private sector spanning multiple industries globally she has the experience and the passion to guide customer’s growth.

    Lucy is currently based in Singapore as a Business Analyst Intern for Shiok Meats, the world's first cultivated crustacean meat company, as part of the Asia New Zealand Foundation Business Internship Program and the Prime Minister's Scholarship for Asia. She is working on identifying trends and priority areas for innovation and corporate sustainability within the alternative protein industry across the APAC region and proposing a 5-year roadmap aligning business priorities and incorporating innovation and sustainability initiatives.

    She recently studied a Bachelor of Food Technology with Honours (Product Development) at Massey University in New Zealand, where her final year project was investigating the rheology and texture of hybrid cultivated meat products as part of the MBIE and A*STAR New Zealand-Singapore Bilateral Research Programme on Future Foods. Aside from that, she has been involved as a Marketing and Communications Lead for the not-for-profit organisation Cellular Agriculture Australia, part of the Alternative Protein Fundamentals 2022 Program through the Cambridge University Alt. Protein Society, and is mentoring young innovators looking to get into the cellular agriculture industry.
