Thailand Market Event - Thursday 27 July at 5:30-6:30PM NZT, hybrid.


ANZBC, in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE), is delighted to bring you the third event in this Market Event Series 2023 - Market Event on Thailand.


Guest speakers H.E Jonathan Kings, New Zealand's High Ambassador to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and Jane Tantakhom, NZTE Country Manager to Thailand, will provide us with an overview of the outlook on Thailand, key developments, market trends and opportunities, as well as the implications on New Zealand trade and business interests in to Thailand.


We will also hear from two business speakers - Michael Eaglen, Founder and Chief Executive of EV Maritime, as well as Amarit Charoenphan, Managing Partner at Aim Ventures. The business speakers will share with us their experience and learnings of doing business in Thailand, and some of the opportunities and challenges of doing business in this ASEAN market.


We are pleased to welcome Sanjay Prakash, Policy Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT Auckland), to moderate this discussion.

    Jonathan Kings assumed his position in April 2022. Jonathan is a senior diplomat, and prior to his appointment Jonathan was from 2015 to 2022 the Deputy Secretary for the Pacific and Development Group in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Pacific and Development Group is responsible for New Zealand’s diplomatic relationships in the Pacific, and it is responsible for New Zealand’s development assistance and humanitarian assistance programmes. Prior his appointment as Deputy Secretary Jonathan was the Administrator of Tokelau. Tokelau is a non-self-governing territory of New Zealand. He was also responsible for New Zealand’s relationships with Niue (a country in free association with New Zealand).

    Before becoming a diplomat Jonathan had extensive experience in investment attraction, trade development, and economic development in New Zealand and internationally. Before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2010, Jonathan was responsible for New Zealand’s investment attraction agency, Investment New Zealand. Jonathan also had responsibilities for New Zealand’s export development activities and national economic development programmes in New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Industry New Zealand. Jonathan also spent several years seconded to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (the OECD) in Paris where he worked on regional development issues. Prior to entering the public sector in 2000, Jonathan was chief executive of an Australasian energy sector consulting firm, and before that he was a senior manager with a multinational in the energy sector.

    Jane is NZTE's Country Manager for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, where she is responsible for developing New Zealand's commercial presence.

    Jane joined NZTE in 2016 as a F&B business development manager. Jane's career has been dedicated to international business development, with various roles across Europe, Asia and the USA. Prior to NZTE, Jane worked for the United States Potato Board in its Thailand representative office, educating consumers and increasing the consumption of US potatoes across multiple channels. Jane later joined Unilever's South East Asia regional office, based in Singapore, as a Regional Assistant Brand Manager.

    Jane graduated with a First Class Honours in Liberal Arts (British and American studies) from Thammasat University and went on to earn a Master Degree in European Business from École supérieure de commerce de Paris (ESCP Europe) and an Executive MBA from Thailand's SASIN Graduate Institution of Business Administration and Kellogg Executive Education.

    Michael Eaglen is a naval architect and chartered engineer with a long and varied marine industry career ranging from yacht design, America’s Cup optimisation and consulting structural engineering to shipyard management and industry governance. His experience spans luxury yachts, racing yachts, military, commercial and patrol vessels as well as geothermal and wind energy.

    Michael is founder and CEO of EV Maritime, which is a cleantech design, engineering, consultancy and technology company headquartered in Auckland New Zealand, on a mission to decarbonise the harbour cities of the world.

    EV Maritime has pro-actively developed a 24-metre 25-knot long range battery electric fast ferry, of which two are now under construction in New Zealand for Auckland Transport. They have recently completed a major consultancy project for World Bank International Finance Corporation in relation to electrification of ferries on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.

    EV Maritime has a strong technology export focus, seeking to take New Zealand performance boat expertise to a global market to help the world’s boat builders become electric boat builders.

He is also the Venture Partner at Mandalay Venture Partners (MVP), a private equity inspired venture fund investing in, building and managing Australian farm to fork innovation, helping create and deliver food security and sustainability globally. He is also formerly the ASEAN Director of Impact Collective (IC), a community-driven investment & acceleration project for impact-driven startups focusing on opportunities in Asia. IC invests in, supports, and connect startups that are solving global challenges to accelerate the positive impact in the world.

    His passion for the startup community and to help entrepreneurs grow has led him to angel invest in many of the top Thai startups and actively coaches over 1000+ different startups founders over the past decade. Because of his impact to the Thai startup ecosystem, he is recognized as an Obama Foundation Asia Pacific Leader, a Fellow of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF), and has been named as one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30: Enterprise Technology, and Thailand Startup Enabler of The Year 2016.

    He is a Techstars All-Stars Community Leader and has been an active Startup Weekend Global Faciltator for the past 8 years, organizing and facilitating over 20+ Techstars related event such as the 1st community-led Startup Weekend in Thailand, Startup Next, Thailand Startup Week, and hosting the Techstars APAC Community Leaders Summit. He continues to be involved at an early stage with more than 40 investments during the past decade as an angel or advisor. He has also coached and consulted ecosystem hubs and leaders in over 30 cities on how to build tech communities.

    Amarit was part of the Asia New Zealand Foundation's Young Business Leader's Initiative (YBLI) programme.

    He also loves kids, running, reading and listening to great books, mentor startups, making coffee, traveling the world to meet interesting people, attend conferences and study new cultures through tech conferences, hackathons and accelerators.

    His passion and life's work is to create a better world where people collaborate with passion, meaning, and purpose while actively supported by an inspiring community and ecosystem.

    Sanjay Prakash is a policy officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Auckland office and is responsible for engagement with New Zealand exporters to South-East Asia. Prior to commencing this role, Sanjay worked to deliver international development cooperation to Melanesia from Wellington. Prior to joining MFAT, Sanjay was employed as a Warfare Officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy.
