The New Zealand ASEAN Business Alliance (ABA), in partnership with the Southeast Asia CAPE and the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is proud to bring you our third annual business conference.


The two sessions spread over the two days will cover

Session 2: Pursuing Innovation in a Digitally Diverse World


This year's ABA Conference is a 2 day, virtual event spread over a week. We'll explore how New Zealand and ASEAN businesses can emerge from the events of the past two years bigger, stronger and more resilient than ever by making the most of the ASEAN region and beyond. Our speakers from New Zealand and across ASEAN will also discuss what initiatives have been successful in supporting businesses across the region, but also what more could happen at a practical level to grow and develop business on the ground.

  • Vangelis Vitalis (Deputy Secretary, Trade and Economic at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade)

    Vangelis Vitalis

    Deputy Secretary, Trade and Economic at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

    Vangelis is Deputy Secretary, Trade and Economic, at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He is also the APEC2021 Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) Chair for New Zealand’s host year and the Chief Negotiator for the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union.

    Previously, Vangelis was the Chief Negotiator who concluded the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and before that in 2007-2009 led the conclusion of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) and the Malaysia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA).

    Prior to taking up his role in Wellington in 2017, Vangelis was New Zealand’s Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva where he chaired the agriculture negotiations in a personal capacity. In this role he helped draft the text of the historic 2015 Nairobi WTO Ministerial Conference to eliminate agricultural export subsidies. Vangelis has also been the Ambassador to the European Union and NATO in Brussels and has had postings to Canberra and Moscow.

    Vangelis has worked outside the Ministry including as an economist in the Secretariat of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He is a past member of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Future Council on Trade and a member of the WEF Trade and Investment Expert network. He has chaired in a personal capacity the OECD Committee on Trade and the Environment (2008-2017), the OECD Global Forum on Trade and Climate Change and is currently the New Zealand Envoy for the Small Advanced Economies’ Initiative.

    A keen saltwater land-based fisherman, Vangelis is married with three children and speaks Greek, German and Russian. He is a longstanding (and suffering) supporter of the Wellington Phoenix Football Club.

    Campbell Wilson

    Chief Executive Officer at Scoot

    Mr Campbell Wilson is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Scoot, the wholly owned low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA). Mr Wilson joined SIA in April 1996 and was previously the founding CEO of Scoot between 2011 to 2016, before the airline merged with Tigerair.

    Prior to his current role, Mr Wilson was the Senior Vice-President Sales & Marketing of SIA, where he oversaw Pricing, Distribution, eCommerce, Merchandising, Brand & Marketing, Global Sales and the airline’s overseas offices.

    During his career with SIA, Mr Wilson has held positions overseas and in the head office. He started off as a Management Trainee in New Zealand in 1996, was posted to Australia in 1999 as Regional Marketing Manager South West Pacific, then to the Singapore head office in 2003, where he held Revenue Management and Network Planning roles. Following that, Mr Wilson was appointed Vice-President Canada in 2006, General Manager Hong Kong in 2008 and General Manager Japan in 2010, before returning to Singapore in 2011 to set up Scoot.

    Born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, Mr Wilson holds a Master of Commerce (1st Class Honours) in Business Administration from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

    Sirma Karapeeva

    Chief Executive Officer at Meat Industry Association

    Sirma joined the Meat Industry Association (MIA) as Trade and Economic Manager in March 2015 following a career in the public sector during which she developed a deep knowledge of trade policy and significant trade negotiations experience.

    She was appointed as CEO in April 2020.

    Prior to joining MIA Sirma was with the Ministry of Primary Industries’ (MPI) trade policy team, where she was involved in progressing the primary sector interests in the negotiations of goods market access and sanitary and phytosanitary provisions in New Zealand’s free trade agreements. Sirma has also worked with the Ministry of Economic Development (now MBIE) in negotiating and implementing New Zealand’s technical barriers to trade obligations.

    In addition to a long history of negotiating bilateral and pluri-lateral trade agreements, Sirma has represented New Zealand’s interests at a number of international forums including the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

    Justine Arroll

    Trade Strategy Manager at Fonterra Cooperative Group

    Justine is currently the Trade Strategy Manager at Fonterra Co-Operative Group where she has responsibility for driving Fonterra’s engagement and advocacy on strategic global trade issues.
    A former New Zealand diplomat, Justine held a range of trade policy roles in the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade prior to joining Fonterra. She was most recently posted to Washington DC where she was responsible for advocacy in relation to a range of bilateral and multilateral trade issues. Justine has also previously served in the New Zealand High Commission in London and as an advisor to the Minister of Trade.
    A graduate of the University of Auckland in Arts and Law, Justine has been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor to the High Court of New Zealand, and has completed studies in international law at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and Georgetown University in Washington DC.

    Wayne Williams is Chief Financial Officer for the Minor Hotel Group. He has more than 20 years' experience working in Thailand and has been with Minor International for the past 14 years.

    Prior to joining Minor, Wayne held a number of senior finance roles in hotels and hospitality businesses in Thailand, Australia and the Pacific.

    Wayne is a Commerce graduate from the University of Queensland and has been Australian CPA certified for 20 years.

    Wayne regularly participates as a panelist at hospitality industry seminars, sharing his knowledge and experiences on strategic planning and risk management issues unique to hotels and resorts.

    Siah Hwee Ang

    Director of Southeast Asia CAPE

    Professor Siah Hwee Ang is the Director of New Zealand’s Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. He is also Professor of International Business and Strategy and the inaugural Chair in Business in Asia at Victoria University of Wellington. In these roles, Siah works closely with various stakeholders and companies on their strategies in Asia and Asia’s engagement in New Zealand.

    Beyond publishing in international top journals and an expert in strategy, competition and international business, Siah is Senior Editor of Strategy, Institutions and Research Design of the Journal of World Business, a leading international business journal, and sits on various editorial boards of international top tier journals over the years. In New Zealand, Siah sits on the national assessment panels for New Zealand Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia, Prime Minister’s Business Scholarships, and Marsden Fund.

    Before joining Victoria University of Wellington, Siah was Professor in Strategy and Associate Dean Postgraduate and International (Asia) at the University of Auckland Business School, a research fellow at Cass Business School, City University in London and the National University of Singapore, where he completed his PhD in Management. Siah is Visiting Professor to a few Asian universities. He writes frequently in the media.

    Andrew Bayly is a New Zealand Engineer and the Managing Director of Emec Technology, a specialist laboratory design and project management consultancy located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Andrew Has been involved in laboratory design and construction for 24 years with multiple PC3 and PC2 projects in Asia.
    Andrew is also currently chair of the Malaysia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of the New Zealand ASEAN Business Alliance, an organisation representing the New Zealand business chambers and councils in ASEAN.

  • Hon Phil Twyford (Minister at State for Trade and Export Growh)

    Hon Phil Twyford

    Minister at State for Trade and Export Growh

    Hon Phil Twyford was born and raised in Auckland. He is the Labour Member of Parliament for Te Atatū, where he lives. Phil’s vision is for New Zealand to deliver hope and opportunity to all people.

    After studying politics at Auckland University, Phil worked as a journalist and union organiser before becoming the founding Executive Director of Oxfam New Zealand. Phil’s strong belief in justice led to him becoming Oxfam’s Global Advocacy Director, based in Washington DC.

    Upon returning to New Zealand, Phil was elected to Parliament for the Labour Party in 2008. In Opposition, he held the portfolios of Housing, Transport, Auckland Issues, and Disarmament and Arms Control.

    Phil is currently the Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Minister of State for Trade and Export Growth, Associate Minister for the Environment and Associate Minister of Immigration.
