Following the success of our recent Indonesia and Singapore Market Updates, ANZBC, in collaboration with our partner, MFAT, is delighted to bring you our third event in the series for 2022 - a Market Update from Malaysia & Brunei.


Guest speakers H.E. Pam Dunn, New Zealand's High Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei, and Catherine Rusby, New Zealand's Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei, will provide us with an overview of the outlook on Malaysia and Brunei, key developments, market trends and opportunities, as well as the implications on New Zealand trade and business interests in to Malaysia and Brunei.


We will also hear from Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Chairman of AirAsia X Berhad, who will share with us her experiences of how the business situation currently is in Malaysia, and provide us with an overview of her trade experience between the two countries, the opportunities and challenges.


The event will be moderated by Kenneth Leong, Director of Tiaki Capital, and ANZBC Immediate Past Chair.


The Zoom event will be concluded with a Q & A session.

    NZ's High Commissioner to Malaysia & Brunei at MFAT NZ

    Pam Dunn has been New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam since December 2020, having acted temporarily in the role since April 2020.

    Pam is a career diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She was posted to China three times: Beijing as First Secretary (1995-98) and again as Deputy Head of Mission (2008-2012) in the New Zealand Embassy to China; and Shanghai as New Zealand Consul-General (2002-05).

    Prior to Malaysia, she was New Zealand’s Ambassador to ASEAN (2018-2020), based in Jakarta. She has also worked in the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok.

    In Wellington, Pam has worked in both North Asia Division and South East Asia Division. In 2016 she was in the Office of the Chief Executive working on Asia issues. In 2017 she was seconded as Senior Private Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

    Pam is from Wellington. She studied at Victoria University and Beijing Normal University. She speaks Chinese, some Indonesian and is learning Malay.

    Pam is married to Ross Dunn and has one son.

    NZ Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei at New Zealand Trade & Enterprise

    Catherine has served as the New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei since April 2021 and has worked with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) since 2017. With NZTE she has held roles in Hong Kong, Chengdu (SW China) and New Zealand supporting NZ exporters growth offshore.

    Before joining NZTE, Catherine grew her experience in several sectors including Economic Development, Financial Services, Information Technology, Food & Beverage, Taxation and Telecommunications in New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

    Her roles included leadership in eBusiness, Customer Management, Sales & Marketing, Logistics, Strategy and Program Management.

    Catherine holds a Bachelor of Mathematics majoring in Computing Science from the University of Waterloo (Canada) and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of NSW (Australia).

    Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz was born in Selama, Perak on 4 November 1943 and had her primary, secondary, and tertiary education in various schools in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Bharu and Johor Bharu.
    She qualified with a BA Degree in 1966, and Masters in Economics in 1970, from the University of Malaya.
    She worked as Tutor and as Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics, University of Malaya between 1966 and 1976.
    She was appointed as Senator in 1974 and resigned to contest in the General Elections in 1978. She served as Member of Parliament from 1978 to 2013 in the Selayang Constituency (1978 to 1982) and Kuala Kangsar Constituency (1982 – 2013)
    In 1976, she was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Enterprises and in 1977 promoted to Deputy Minister of Finance.
    In 1980, she was made Minister of Public Enterprises a post she held for 7 years. In 1987, she was appointed Minister for Trade and Industry (subsequently redesignated Minister of International Trade and Industry), and served for 21 years up to 2008.
    She served in the UMNO Supreme Council for 38 years since winning a seat in the council in 1975.
    She has received various award from the States of Selangor, Perak, Malacca, Terengganu and Sarawak, as well as awards from Thailand, Argentina and Chile.
    She has also been conferred Honorary Doctorates from University Malaya, University Putra Malaysia, University Utara Malaysia, University Tun Abdul Razak Malaysia, HELP University, Cyberjaya University College, University Tunku Abdul Rahman and Dominican University of California, United States.
    She is now serving as Adjunct Professor at College of Business, University Utara Malaysia and Chancellor of Emeritus University. Tan Sri Rafidah is also an Honorary Advisor for Asia-New Zealand Foundation.
    Currently, she is the Chairman of AirAsia X Berhad. She is also Patron of several NGO’s and Advisor to Sarawak Renewable Energy Corridor (RECODA).

    Kenneth arrived in New Zealand from Malaysia as an international student in the mid 1990s. Upon graduation, he worked at Deloitte and Macquarie, on mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory and capital raising projects. With over 20 years’ experience in international business and corporate finance, he is now director-shareholder in a number of private businesses across multiple sectors including education, retail, investments, health technology and transportation. He is co-founder / director of the award-winning face mask business MEO, with offices in Auckland and Xiamen. From 2010-2019, he was director of Edenz, a large private export education provider, until the sale to Australian interests. He works extensively with senior business people and high net worth investors, utilising his multi-lingual and business development skills to facilitate business across cultures. He is particularly adept at working with businesses and clients to overcome difficult situations, navigating chaos and providing clarity. He was inducted by KEA as a World Class New Zealander in 2015. He is a Trustee of the Auckland Foundation (since 2016).
