In anticipation of the ASEAN Business Alliance Conference 2022, the ASEAN Business Alliance (ABA) and SEA CAPE are very pleased to bring you the ABA Conference Launch event on Wednesday 19 October at 5:30pm NZT (online).


We welcome three guest speakers to the event :


  • H.E Stuart Calman, New Zealand's Ambassador to ASEAN, who will provide an update on New Zealand trade with ASEAN, including ASEAN Economic Community progress, AANZFTA upgrade, and its relevance for NZ business.
  • Andrew Bayly, Founder and Owner of Emec Technology, and ABA Chair, based in Malaysia.
  • Professor Siah Hwee Ang, Director of New Zealand's Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (SEA CAPE).


Liz Bell, Executive Director of ANZBC, will moderate the Launch event.

    Stuart is a career public servant and diplomat and took up his role as New Zealand Ambassador to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 7 April 2022.
    Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in 2013 he has held leadership roles in the Pacific and Development Group, including as Manager Energy, Infrastructure and Environment, Divisional Manager Global Development and Scholarships (including oversight of NZ’s development programme in South East Asia) and as Special Adviser in the office of the Deputy Secretary, before moving to the Europe and Middle East and Australia Group in 2020 and Asia and Americas Group in 2021. He has extensive experience in energy, climate change and development issues. Stuart has previously been posted to Canberra and, most recently, as Deputy Head of Mission in Beijing.
    Prior to joining MFAT, Stuart held management roles in a range of policy and international relations teams in the Ministry for the Environment (1995-2001 and 2009-2012) and the Ministry of Economic Development (2001-2008).
    Stuart studied Business, Economics and International Development at Massey University. Stuart’s whakapapa (family/tribal ancestry) includes Ngati Toa, Ngati Raukawa and Ngai Tahu. He is married with two children and his interests include cooking, mountain biking and most activities involving water or the ocean.

    Founder and owner of Emec Technology, a consultancy company specialising in the design of laboratories for research
    and development, bio-containment and oil and gas, and is the founder and owner of Emec Scientific, a manufacturing and contracting company making specialist laboratory equipment and the building and renovation of laboratories.
    After completing a Degree in Engineering from Canterbury
    University he has been living in Malaysia since 1993 and has worked on projects right across Asia.
    Emec Technology was started in in 2003 and clients include the Malaysian Ministry of Health, Petronas and all Malaysia’s leading hospitals. The laboratory equipment is used throughout Malaysia and Singapore and exported to Australia, India and Vietnam.
    He is currently Chair of the Malaysia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, MNZCC is a non profit promoting business in Malaysia amongst New Zealanders and those doing business with New Zealand.
    He is also a founding member and Chair of the New Zealand ASEAN Business Alliance. NZABA is an alliance of the New Zealand chambers and business councils across ASEAN and New Zealand and works to promote business between chambers and provide an integrated network for New Zealand businesses entering ASEAN.

    Siah Hwee Ang is Professor of International Business and Strategy at Victoria University of Wellington. He is also the Director of New Zealand’s Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. From 2013-2021, he was also the Professorial Chair in Business in Asia. In these roles, Siah works closely with various stakeholders and companies on their strategies in Asia and Asia’s engagement in New Zealand.

    Siah’s research centres around the connection between strategy, international business and international trade. His works have been published in international top-tier journals and have won several research awards. He is also Reviewing Editor at the Journal of World Business and Senior Editor at the Asia Pacific Journal of Management, leading international and Asia business journals respectively. Siah has sat on the national assessment panels for New Zealand Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia, Prime Minister’s Business Scholarships, and Marsden Fund, a prestigious fund supporting excellence in science, engineering, maths, social sciences and the humanities in New Zealand. He currently serves as executive board member at the ASEAN NZ Business Council and also board member of the Business Central & Wellington Chamber of Commerce joint board.

    Before joining Victoria University of Wellington, Siah was Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Auckland Business School, and has work experience in City University in London and National University of Singapore, where he completed his PhD in Management. Siah is Visiting Professor to a few Asian universities. He writes frequently in the media.
