ASEAN Forum 2020, brought to you in partnership with the Southeast Asia CAPE


The theme this year is: Resilience, Reinvention, Rejuvenation.

This 100% Virtual Forum (held on Whova integrated with Zoom) and takes a snapshot of New Zealand's relationship with ASEAN now, as well as looking forward at the possibilities of future potential and development.

The plenary keynotes will set an overview of the ASEAN - NZ political and economic relationship, and how that importantly impacts on the business we do.

The breakout sessions delve deeper into the Forum themes of:

  • Resilience (supply chains and business continuity),
  • Reinvention (Innovative Sustainability) and
  • Rejuvenation (positively using a crisis to affect change, and responding to consumer behaviours).

Throughout the Forum we'll be focussed on providing the best possible interaction with our digital audience and e-networking options. As always, our aim is to create strong awareness of the possibilities for NZ business in ASEAN and ASEAN business in NZ. The ASEAN Forum is on Wednesday, 2nd September, in the afternoon (NZ time).

    Amarit is the ASEAN Director of Impact Collective (IC), a community-driven investment and acceleration project for impact-driven startups focusing on opportunities in Asia. IC invests in, supports, and connect startups that are solving global challenges to accelerate the positive impact in the world.

    He is best known as the Co-founder and Former CEO of HUBBA, Thailand’s first coworking space and community that is the only Google for Startups Partner Hub in Thailand. He is also Chief International Officer and Cofounder of Techsauce, one of Southeast Asia's leading technology media and events company. His passion for the startup community and to help entrepreneurs grow has led him to angel invest in many of the top Thai startups and actively coaches over 1000+ different startups founders over the past decade. He is also a Fellow of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF), and has been named as one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30: Enterprise Technology, and Thailand Startup Enabler of The Year 2016.

    Paul is founder of Spirit of 69 Limited which is a company distributing and marketing tobacco and alcohol products, but also builds local brands.
    Paul was born in Thailand and moved to Australia at the age of 3. Educated in Sydney as an accountant, he changed career paths and continents several times. He currently lives in Bangkok, Thailand. Paul has worked across a variety of organisations, primarily within FMCG, but was approached from Bacardi to run their newly acquired 42 Below business. He became the Global Managing Director and CEO of 42 Below Ltd, and was responsible for Bacardi’s stable of brands within New Zealand, until August 2010
    During 2018/19, Paul focused on creating a brand with particular emphasis on Thailand and an innovative model within the alcohol industry.

    NZ ABAC Rep

    Stephanie Honey is the policy advisor to the New Zealand members of the APEC Business Advisory Council. Stephanie is also the Senior Trade Policy Manager for Beef + Lamb NZ, Associate Director of the New Zealand International Business Forum, co-founder of a business offering executive education in trade policy and serves on the Board of the New Zealand Horticulture Export Authority, the Advisory Board of the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence, and the Executive Board of TradeExperettes. Stephanie’s interests include regional economic integration especially in the Asia-Pacific, the WTO, agriculture and food trade, services trade, the digital economy, SMEs and women in trade; she has travelled and worked widely in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and more broadly. Prior to becoming a consultant, Stephanie worked for many years as a trade negotiator for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including serving as the New Zealand Agriculture Negotiator in the WTO Doha Round in Geneva, at the New Zealand Mission to the EU in Brussels working on trade issues, as the senior New Zealand official responsible for the bilateral relationship with Australia and in a variety of other roles.

    Ziena Jalil

    Ziena works across the public, private and NGO sectors, in governance and strategy, marketing and business development, and communications and stakeholder engagement.
    She sits on the Boards of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Manukau Institute of Technology, Unitec, and the Cancer Society Auckland Northland. She is also the co-founder of myyodaa, a mobile app that connects yoga and meditation students and teachers around the globe, via personalised, live, one-to-one video sessions.
    Ziena is a keynote speaker, facilitator, MC and commentator on topics as diverse as economic development, international and vocational education, Asia business, leadership, diversity and inclusion, crisis management, nation branding, and politics.
    A finalist in the global category of the New Zealand Women of Influence awards, Ziena has also received several international awards for her work promoting New Zealand trade, investment and education in Asia, where she was based for 10 years in roles including Regional Director (South & South East Asia) for Education New Zealand, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Singapore, and Head of North Asia Marketing and Communications for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

    Teresa is the Programme Leader of the ASEAN Food and Beverage Alliance (AFBA), a network of food & beverage national associations in Southeast Asia that seeks to support harmonisation efforts across South East Asia and provide a voice for the ASEAN food industry. She works with national associations to coordinate industry efforts to deliver effective input and practical guidance on ASEAN policies to unlock the food sector’s growth potential in and out of the region.

    Alison Mann

    New Zealand Senior Official for ASEAN at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

    Alison Mann is New Zealand’s Senior Official for ASEAN, the East Asia Summit, and the ASEAN Regional Forum, and leads the Asia Regional Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has a trade policy background, with extensive experience in the Australian and North Asian markets in particular. She has been posted to Seoul, to Beijing and Canberra as Deputy Head of Mission, and to Brazil as New Zealand Ambassador. She has also worked in the Australia, North Asia and Trade Negotiations Divisions in Wellington, led the Ministry’s Asia Pacific Regional Integration Division until April 2018, and also spent two years as the Ministry’s internal auditor. As a trade negotiator, she managed New Zealand’s bilateral negotiations on the WTO accessions of China and Chinese Taipei, and led bilateral FTA negotiations with Korea as New Zealand Lead Negotiator. She has also led New Zealand’s engagement with APEC as Senior Official and is currently New Zealand’s representative on its APEC Vision Group.

    Gita Wirjawan is Chairman of Ancora Group, an Indonesian business group with interests in private equity investing, natural
    resources, real estate, sports, and music, which he founded in 2008. He served as Minister of Trade and Chairman of the
    Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) of the Indonesian Government during the period 2009-2014. As an investment
    banker, he has held key senior appointments at Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, playing leading roles in many mergers,
    corporate restructuring, corporate financing and strategic sales involving leading companies in Southeast Asia.
    Gita is currently a member of international advisory board of the CHUBB group of insurance companies, and a member of
    advisory board of Alpha JWC Ventures, a South East Asian venture capital firm. In education, Gita sits at the council of
    Global Advisors for Yale University School of Management, and the board of Governors for Asia School of Business (MIT
    Sloan).

    Chief Economist at ANZ

    Sharon joined the ANZ economics team in 2010 and became Chief Economist in late 2017. She started her career as a macroeconomist at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1998, and has also worked at the central bank of Norway for two years, before moving to the New Zealand banking sector. Sharon holds a Master of Commerce from the University of Canterbury.
    Sharon developed the ANZ Truckometer, an economic indicator based on traffic flow data, and writes the weekly ANZ Charts that Matter.
