Doing Business with ASEAN - Practical Insights for Indonesia - In Person Event.


In collaboration with BNZ/Meredith Connell/Grant Thornton/ANZBC, we are delighted to bring you the third event in this series, focussing on doing business with ASEAN. Please join us on Wednesday 28 September at 5:30PM, for a special event - Doing Business with ASEAN, Practical Insights for Indonesia, hosted at BNZ Head Office, Auckland CBD.


This event is the third of three hybrid events throughout the year offering attendees practical advice on 'how to' in three major ASEAN markets on three areas of operation – Banking, Legal, and Accounting, as well as a business perspective. This third event in the series will focus on Indonesia.


We welcome four guest speakers to the panel :

  • Denise Paterson, Partner Tax at Grant Thornton, based in New Zealand.
  • Gustaaf Reerink, Foreign Counsel at ABNR, based in Indonesia.
  • Tim Anderson, President Director at Sun Cable Group Indonesia, based in Indonesia.


The discussion will be moderated by Cindy Seaman, Indonesian born and bred, with a corporate finance background.


The panel discussion will be followed by networking.

    Monica Gabriel returned to New Zealand 4 years ago from living in Singapore for nearly 20 years.
    A veteran of over 25 years in banking, Monica held various roles including Country and Regional manager for various ASEAN countries whilst working for WellsFargo in the Large Corporate/Financial institution space.
    Monica has had various postings within Asia and had global responsibility for some large and complex institutions headquartered out of Asia.
    Her last role in WellsFargo was a global strategy role reviewing and bringing change to WellsFargo’s international business operating model.
    Monica worked for a large Singaporean bank in the SME banking space for 5 years and prior to that had quite a diverse business background working across a number of industries including FMCG, aviation and private power development.
    Monica enjoys mentoring young leaders in business and has begun to be a regular panellist on ASEAN related forums.
    Malaysian born Monica is also a Massey University graduate majoring in International Business and is now living in the Kapiti Coast, with her Kiwi husband and daughter. She presently works with BNZ as a Commercial Banker in a heavily trade related portfolio, based in Wellington.

    Denise has specialised in tax for over 20 years in both the UK and NZ, working in NZ since 2004.

    Prior to joining Grant Thornton, she worked at a big four firm working with a variety of clients, both NZ headquartered and in-bound. Her technical experience is across all tax areas including corporate tax, transaction tax and employment tax and GST.   

    Denise has significant experience with tax compliance, tax accounting, tax advisory and structuring, GST, employment taxes as well as managing the day to day relationships for a range of clients from privately owned NZ businesses to NZ subsidiaries of multinational companies.

    Gustaaf specializes in corporate and M&A, and competition / antitrust, advising clients across a broad range of industries, including automotive, aviation, consumer goods & e-commerce, education, financial institutions, pharmaceuticals & healthcare, power & renewables, real estate & infrastructure, shipping & maritime, telecoms, and tourism.
    Prior to joining ABNR, he worked as an associate in the Amsterdam and Brussels offices of a Netherlands-based tier-1 law firm.
    In his corporate and M&A practice, Gustaaf has assisted a long list of high- end multinational clients with their M&A and FDI deals in Indonesia, the Indonesian aspects of global M&A deals, and the drafting of transaction documents, such as share purchase agreements, share subscription agreements, asset purchase agreements, shareholders agreements and related commercial agreements. He also regularly advises on the establishment of joint-venture companies in Indonesia and the negotiating and drafting of joint-venture agreements.
    In competition / antitrust, he focuses on cartel, dominant-position, and merger-control matters, and has worked on several landmark merger-control cases in Indonesia. In addition, he regularly reviews commercial agreements from an antitrust perspective and has been involved in corporate internal investigations relating to antitrust issues for a range of multinational clients with operations in Indonesia. He also regularly assists international and regional law firms with the Indonesian competition law aspects of global and foreign-to-foreign deals.
    As a key member of ABNR’s award-winning aviation practice, Gustaaf advises across the entire industry spectrum (airside and groundside), including aircraft and aircraft-engine financing, acquisition, and leasing (wet and dry), comprising secured lending (Cape Town Convention), operating and finance leasing, and syndicated financing. He also regularly handles the Indonesian aspects of aviation matters on behalf of leading international law firms.
    Gustaaf is a graduate of Leiden University in the Netherlands, where he earned an LL.M in private law, an MA in Indonesian studies, and a PhD for a dissertation on Indonesian land law. In addition, he read law at King’s College and The School of Oriental and African Studies in London, England, and studied French at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France.
    He regularly publishes articles and makes presentations on Indonesian legal matters, and serves as a guest lecturer at several Indonesian universities, as well as the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights. He was admitted to the Amsterdam Bar in 2008, is a registered foreign lawyer in Indonesia, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb).
    Gustaaf is recognized as a leading individual for competition and antitrust and a key lawyer for aviation by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific.

    Prior to this, Tim led the Jacobs Engineering & Consulting operation in Indonesia, where he and his team focused on delivering value to their clients in the Power, Transportation, Infrastructure, Industrial, Environmental & Social Sectors.

    Before being the Country Manager and President Director for Jacobs, Tim was New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner to Indonesia for five years.

    Tim has over 29 years of involvement with Indonesia and New Zealand with deep knowledge and extensive Public / private sector networks particularly in the Renewable Energy, Aviation, Rail, Infrastructure, Food & Beverage, Healthcare and ICT sectors.

    Tim has lived in many parts of Indonesia (including Malang, Bali, Surabaya and Jakarta) and speaks fluent Bahasa Indonesia.
