Thailand Market Update - Wednesday 21 September at 5:30PM NZT, a hybrid event.


Following the success of our recent Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines Market Updates, ANZBC, in collaboration with our partner, MFAT, is delighted to bring you our fifth event in the series for 2022 - a Market Update from Thailand.


Guest speakers H.E. Jonathan Kings, New Zealand's Ambassador to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and Jane Tantakhom, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Country Manager Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, will provide us with an overview of the outlook on Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, key developments, market trends and opportunities, as well as the implications on New Zealand trade and business interests in those countries.


We will also hear from Sam White, Country Manager of T & G Thailand, and George Sinclair, Director of Operations - Building Structures (Asia) Beca, who will share with us their experiences of the current business situation in Thailand. They will also speak about the opportunities and challenges of doing business in this ASEAN market.


The event will be moderated by Hayden Montgomerie, Manager (Social Services) Strategy and Consulting at Accenture, and immediate-past ANZBC ExCo Member.


The hybrid event will be concluded with a Q & A session.

    Jonathan Kings assumed his position in April 2022. Jonathan is a senior diplomat, and prior to his appointment Jonathan was from 2015 to 2022 the Deputy Secretary for the Pacific and Development Group in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Pacific and Development Group is responsible for New Zealand’s diplomatic relationships in the Pacific, and it is responsible for New Zealand’s development assistance and humanitarian assistance programmes. Prior his appointment as Deputy Secretary Jonathan was the Administrator of Tokelau. Tokelau is a non-self-governing territory of New Zealand. He was also responsible for New Zealand’s relationships with Niue (a country in free association with New Zealand).

    Before becoming a diplomat Jonathan had extensive experience in investment attraction, trade development, and economic development in New Zealand and internationally. Before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2010, Jonathan was responsible for New Zealand’s investment attraction agency, Investment New Zealand. Jonathan also had responsibilities for New Zealand’s export development activities and national economic development programmes in New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Industry New Zealand. Jonathan also spent several years seconded to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (the OECD) in Paris where he worked on regional development issues. Prior to entering the public sector in 2000, Jonathan was chief executive of an Australasian energy sector consulting firm, and before that he was a senior manager with a multinational in the energy sector.

    Jane is NZTE's Country Manager for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, where she is responsible for developing New Zealand's commercial presence.

    Jane joined NZTE in 2016 as a F&B business development manager. Jane's career has been dedicated to international business development, with various roles across Europe, Asia and the USA. Prior to NZTE, Jane worked for the United States Potato Board in its Thailand representative office, educating consumers and increasing the consumption of US potatoes across multiple channels. Jane later joined Unilever's South East Asia regional office, based in Singapore, as a Regional Assistant Brand Manager.

    Jane graduated with a First Class Honours in Liberal Arts (British and American studies) from Thammasat University and went on to earn a Master Degree in European Business from École supérieure de commerce de Paris (ESCP Europe) and an Executive MBA from Thailand's SASIN Graduate Institution of Business Administration and Kellogg Executive Education.

    Based in Bangkok, Sam is T&Gs Country Manager for Thailand. He is responsible for the management and performance of the largest importer of New Zealand fresh produce in this important strategic Asian market. Sam and his family have been in Thailand now for almost 2 years.

    Prior, Sam was the Operations Manager – China for Zespri international. He was located in Shanghai for more than 8 years with Zespri and was a part of the more than tripling of that business in China over the period.

    Both T&G Zespri are global leaders in fresh produce and over the last decade, Sam has been well placed in Asia in both organisations during significant periods of growth and transformation.

    George is a Director of Operations for Beca in the ASEAN regions overseeing its Thailand, Indonesian and Myanmar building structures business. He has worked in technical engineering and management roles for Beca companies since 2007 across New Zealand, Australia, UK and is currently based in Bangkok.

    Beca is one of the largest professional engineering consultancies in the Asia-Pacific region, with its headquarters in Auckland. From its New Zealand origins in the 1920s, it grew into Asia in the 1970s and now employs around 500 staff in the ASEAN region. In Thailand Beca has a proud track record providing engineering and related services in the commercial building, tourism and hospitality, and industrial market segments.
