Vietnam Market Event - Thursday 12 October at 5:30-6:30PM NZT, hybrid.


ANZBC, in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE), is delighted to bring you the fourth and final event in this 2023 Market Event Series - Market Event on Vietnam.


Guest speakers H.E Tredene Dobson, New Zealand's Ambassador to Vietnam and Scott James, NZTE Trade Commissioner to Vietnam, will provide us with an overview of the outlook on Vietnam, key developments, market trends and opportunities, as well as the implications on New Zealand trade and business interests in to Vietnam.


We will also hear from two business speakers - Mark Pay, GM Global Sales Rockit Global Ltd, and Giles Cooper, Partner Allens, based in Hanoi. The business speakers will share with us their experience and learnings of doing business in Vietnam, and some of the opportunities and challenges of doing business in this ASEAN market.


We are pleased to welcome Joe Clifford, Policy Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, to moderate this discussion.

    Tredene Dobson is New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

    Prior to her appointment, Tredene managed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s International Security Policy Unit. In this role, Tredene led New Zealand’s engagement on a wide range of security policy issues, including counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism, defence deployments and policy, cyber security and space policy, irregular migration and maritime security.

    From January 2019 – until June 2020, Tredene was New Zealand’s Ambassador to Iraq. From 2012 to 2016 Tredene was Deputy Head of Mission at the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta and New Zealand’s Mission to ASEAN. Prior to that she managed the Ministry’s Oceans and Environment Law Unit in the Ministry’s Legal Division and was New Zealand’s senior legal adviser on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations. Tredene’s first posting was in Seoul, South Korea.

    Tredene has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree (First Class) in Political Studies from the University of Otago, New Zealand. She speaks Indonesian and is proficient in German and Korean. In her spare time, she is a keen scuba diver and coffee enthusiast.

    Based in Ho Chi Minh, Scott is New Zealand's Consul General and Trade Commissioner to Viet Nam. He is responsible for facilitating and promoting trade and investment, as well as building and maintaining an extensive network of business relationships relevant to New Zealand businesses in Viet Nam.

    He joined NZTE in 2012 and has previously held roles supporting New Zealand exporters to achieve their growth goals across a wide range of export markets. As a Customer Manager and Customer Advisor based in the Auckland office, he predominantly worked with New Zealand Consumer Goods and Services businesses.

    Before taking up his current post in Ho Chi Minh, Scott served as the Market Manager for the AUSPAC region, where he supported the NZTE team across Australia and the Pacific to deliver localised support to New Zealand businesses. As Market Manager Scott was also responsible for NZTE's involvement in a number of NZ based business councils active across the AUSPAC region.

    Scott has a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and History from Victoria University of Wellington and a Graduate Diploma in International Business from Massey University.

Giles also serves as a Beachhead advisor for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and, in that capacity, regularly guides New Zealand companies on Vietnam market entry matters. Giles qualified to practice law in New Zealand and is registered as a foreign lawyer with the Ministry of Justice in Vietnam.     Joe is the Viet Nam Desk Officer in the South and South East Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He works closely with a range of government and non-government stakeholders to help deepen New Zealand’s relationship with Viet Nam. Prior to joining the Ministry Joe has an academic background in South East Asia, having completed a Masters in Development Studies at the University of Auckland.
